��Ƶ hosted an engaging panel discussion on modern hiring practices as part of its Health Sciences and Business Programs Strategic Seminar Series on Thursday, March 12, 2026. Professionals from healthcare, human resources, education, business consulting, and recreation management came together to offer candid advice on how to stand out in today ��Ƶ ’s competitive job market.

The conversation centered on what employers need to see beyond what appears on a résumé. While technical skills matter, panelists emphasized that the interview process is where they could see a candidate ��Ƶ ’s ability to collaborate with peers or adapt to different daily situations. ��Ƶ “A résumé does not tell me how they ��Ƶ ’re going to do working with colleagues, students, community members, and parents, ��Ƶ ” said Tina Clever, human resources director for the Chambersburg Area School District.

Panelists encouraged those looking for work to practice telling their stories, whether through mock interviews, peer feedback, or even AI tools that help generate interview questions. The interview is where hiring managers make sure the individual is authentic and willing to make an investment in the company or position. They cautioned against relying on AI to write résumés or cover letters, urging applicants to personalize everything they submit.

Panelists urged students to pursue internships early ��Ƶ —and more than one if possible ��Ƶ —using those experiences to build skills, confidence, and professional connections. Internships, they said, are often extended job interviews. ��Ƶ “When you complete an internship or externship program, employers really get to know you and connect with you, ��Ƶ ” said Lindsey Kearns, nurse manager for WellSpan Chambersburg. ��Ƶ “And I would much rather hire someone who I know is a good fit for the unit, somebody who's willing to learn, who's ready to dive in. ��Ƶ ”

Networking, both in professional spaces and among peers, was another recurring theme. Students were encouraged to join LinkedIn, attend local events, and get comfortable with uncomfortable situations. ��Ƶ “You never know who's watching, who you might have an impact on, and when that's going to come back around, ��Ƶ ” said Heather Hockenberry, executive coach and business consultant with Hockenberry Management Consulting.

The discussion closed with panelists reminding students that job searching is a two-way process. Candidates should evaluate organizations just as thoughtfully as organizations evaluate them. Above all, they encouraged students to stay curious, stay open, and keep stretching themselves toward their goals.

��Ƶ will host the next event in its Health Sciences and Business Programs Strategic Seminar Series on Thursday, March 12, 2026, with a session titled ��Ƶ “Hiring Practices and Workforce Planning. ��Ƶ ” The seminar will explore how modern organizations recruit, hire, develop, and retain employees, including how artificial intelligence is influencing those processes.

The event will begin with networking from 5:00 to 5:30 p.m., followed by a panel discussion from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the Harry R. Brooks Complex for Science, Mathematics, and Technology Auditorium.

Hosted by Wilson ��Ƶ ’s Health Sciences and Business Programs, the panel discussion will examine how workplaces evaluate candidates and employees, what skills and personal attributes hiring managers value most, and how organizations make informed decisions about workforce needs. Whether attendees are entering the job market, re-entering after time away, or seeking advancement, the seminar offers an invaluable look at modern hiring and promotion practices.

��Ƶ held the second event in its Strategic Seminar Series, focused on Conflict Management, on November 5, 2025, as part of its annual Career Week. The Q&A style session welcomed attendees from the Wilson campus and local community, offering an opportunity to engage with panelists from diverse professional backgrounds who shared insights on navigating workplace conflict.

��Ƶ “The purpose is to talk about leadership, not just in a business context but in your everyday life, ��Ƶ ” said Lance Cain, D.B.A, director of business and assistant professor of business. ��Ƶ “We all experience conflict from time to time, so we want to have a discussion about what that looks like in everybody ��Ƶ ’s life. ��Ƶ ”

In spring 2025, Cain teamed up with Mindy Guinard, director of nursing and health sciences, to collaborate on the first Strategic Seminar. Their partnership highlighted the relevance of leadership and conflict resolution in every discipline.

Linda Boeckman, director of career development, joined Cain and Guinard in planning the seminar ��Ƶ ’s topic and selecting speakers, making sure to represent a variety of careers and majors. ��Ƶ “We want to address challenges in the workplace that are relevant and help prepare students for the professional world, ��Ƶ ” said Boeckman.

Guinard added, ��Ƶ “I think it ��Ƶ ’s a benefit to each department by showing we all have common threads in our areas of practice. ��Ƶ ”

The panelists for the conflict management discussion represented a range of industries, including health care, education, and law. Each speaker shared their perspectives on workplace conflict, including causes, and strategies on how to navigate these challenges.

Mike Cogliano, vice-president at WellSpan Health and president of WellSpan Gettysburg, said ��Ƶ “As a leader, it ��Ƶ ’s very important to practice empathy. ��Ƶ ” He stressed the importance of consistent, meaningful connection with your employees, adding, ��Ƶ “Be empathetic, be understanding, and be sympathetic to whatever they're dealing with. ��Ƶ ” Building on that idea, Laura Stover, director of HR advisory services at SEK CPAs and Advisors and a board member for Habitat for Humanity of Franklin County, emphasized the role of the workplace environment when she said, ��Ƶ “If you have a culture where people feel psychologically safe, which means they can be vulnerable, they can make mistakes, and they can ask for help, that ��Ƶ ’s when you have great discussion, creativity, and innovation. ��Ƶ ” When employees feel safe, she explained, they ��Ƶ ’re more likely to collaborate and less likely to experience conflict.

Guinard hopes insights such as these will encourage students to think critically about leadership and provide the skills they will need in the future. ��Ƶ “It ��Ƶ ’s also a great way for community members to see how eager Wilson students are to learn and network, ��Ƶ ” she said.

Cain agreed and added that the seminars are great opportunities for students involved in leadership organizations on campus, like the ��Ƶ Government Association, to shine.

Another strategic seminar is being planned for spring 2026.

Conflict is an inevitable part of professional life, but it doesn ��Ƶ ’t have to hinder productivity, creativity, or relationships. ��Ƶ invites students, professionals, and community members to explore effective strategies for managing workplace conflict at the upcoming Strategic Seminar Series: Conflict Management on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, in the auditorium of the Harry R. Brooks Complex for Science, Mathematics, and Technology at ��Ƶ. The event will start with a networking session at 4:30 p.m. followed by a panel discussion at 5 p.m.

Hosted by Wilson ��Ƶ ’s Health Sciences and Business Programs, this free event features a panel of seasoned professionals from diverse industries, including healthcare, education, law, and human resources. Attendees will gain practical insights into navigating conflict in professional settings, with a focus on communication, resolution strategies, and leadership challenges.

At the end of Wilson ��Ƶ ’s Fall 2024 semester, four student teams in the Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management Course (BUS 220), presented their final business plans. Each plan reflected a semester ��Ƶ ’s worth of collaboration, research, and strategic thinking, pitched to their peers as if to real investors. The purpose of the project was to get students to think through what it takes to start up and run an actual business.

Unlike popular television shows like ��Ƶ “Shark Tank, ��Ƶ ” where the spotlight is on the product and its profitability, this course focuses on the process of building a business. Business faculty encourage the students to dream big ��Ƶ —whether creating a nonprofit that provides pet care for low-income families or by creating a financial advisory service tailored to college students ��Ƶ —and walk through every step of making that dream operational.

��Ƶ “We ��Ƶ ’re not asking, ��Ƶ ‘Can you sell this tomorrow? ��Ƶ ’ ��Ƶ ” explained Lance Cain, assistant professor and director of the business program. ��Ƶ “We ��Ƶ ’re asking, ��Ƶ ‘Can you plan this from the ground up? ��Ƶ ’ ��Ƶ ”

This difference in focus allows the students to dive into marketing strategies, operating budgets, supply chains, and resource planning. Students learn to identify their target audience, assess competition, and make tough decisions about what ��Ƶ ’s feasible and what ��Ƶ ’s not. They read case studies, analyze failures, and learn that most entrepreneurs aren ��Ƶ ’t overnight successes. Throughout the semester, students also engage with an online business simulation program, managing a virtual retail shop and responding to dynamic scenarios. The system evaluates their decisions, offering insight into real-world outcomes.

Perhaps the most valuable aspect of the course is that it offers a risk-free environment for experimentation. The only stakes are academic, which frees students to be creative, bold, and even a little idealistic. For some, it ��Ƶ ’s a steppingstone to launching a real business. One student used the class to develop a business plan for a horse boarding facility ��Ƶ —an idea she is actively pursuing outside of class.

For others, it ��Ƶ ’s a transformative experience that reshapes how they think about work, leadership, and innovation. ��Ƶ “Since this is a safe environment to work through issues, it provides students the opportunity to deal with things a little more subjectively, ��Ƶ ” added Cain.

In the end, the entrepreneurship class isn ��Ƶ ’t just about writing a business plan. It ��Ƶ ’s about learning how to see opportunities, solve problems, and build something from nothing.

Lance Cain, D.B.A., brings a wealth of industry experience and academic insight to his role as a business educator. He holds a Bachelor of Science in mathematics education from Kent State University and an M.B.A. with a concentration in marketing from Malone College (now Malone University). After working for 26 years in the healthcare industry, Cain returned to academia to earn a doctorate in business administration with a focus on marketing from Walden University. His dissertation, ��Ƶ “Strategies for Financial Sustainability in Family-Owned Nonprofit Organizations, ��Ƶ ” reflects his commitment to practical, mission-driven business solutions.

During his distinguished career in industry, Cain served in director-level roles, working closely with C-suite executives to align marketing, sales, and operations through strategic personnel development and enterprise-level CRM integration. His leadership consistently focused on enhancing organizational efficiency and driving revenue growth.

Motivated by a lifelong passion for teaching and learning, Cain transitioned to higher education full-time and now serves as director of the business program and assistant professor of business at ��Ƶ. He remains committed to preparing the next generation of business professionals and leaders with the knowledge, skills, and strategic mindset to thrive in a dynamic marketplace.
