A documentary on the work of Amos Paul Kennedy Jr., a visionary artist and educator who transforms the tradition of letterpress printing into a vehicle for social justice and collective learning. Kennedy ��Ƶ ’s prints ��Ƶ —bold, layered, and unapologetically direct ��Ƶ —blend typographic form with the urgency of protest, creating a body of work that speaks as much to the heart as to the eye. Each poster is a declaration, a reminder, a lesson ��Ƶ —designed not only to be seen, but to be felt, remembered, and shared.

Working with handset wood and metal type, Kennedy embraces the physical labor and tactile beauty of traditional printing methods. He overprints vibrant colors in dense, rhythmic layers, allowing chance and repetition to become part of the message. No two prints are ever the same ��Ƶ —each carries its own visual weight and emotional resonance. Quoting civil rights leaders, community voices, and proverbs rooted in cultural wisdom, Kennedy ��Ƶ ’s work confronts injustice while educating and inspiring. His posters transform everyday materials into instruments of empowerment, reminding us that knowledge, like art, belongs to everyone. This exhibition is a celebration of design as dialogue, and of letterpress as a tool for change.

On Thursday, September 18 at 4:30 PM we will open the exhibition Amos Paul Kennedy Jr: Consider Everything An Experiment in the Bogigian Gallery at ��Ƶ. You are invited to experience the powerful work of Amos Paul Kennedy Jr., a visionary artist and educator who transforms the tradition of letterpress printing into a vehicle for social justice and collective learning. An exhibition featuring artwork by visual arts and graphic design faculty from ��Ƶ and Hagerstown Community College will open Wednesday, February 26, in Cooley Gallery, ��Ƶ. The show runs from February 26 to April 30, 2025. There will be a reception to open the exhibition on Wednesday, February 26 from 4:30 to 6 p.m.

Admission to the exhibition is free.

This year ��Ƶ ’s exhibition will center on Wilson ��Ƶ ’s spring ArtsFest ��Ƶ ’25 theme, Shared Stories. ArtsFest is an annual celebration of the arts in our community, showcasing the remarkable art, artists, and artistic opportunities at Wilson. ArtsFest ��Ƶ ’25 will run from April 7 ��Ƶ – 11, 2025. As part of ArtsFest ��Ƶ ’25, our Cooley show will center on community Shared Stories through shared experiences, participation, practice, cooperation, collaboration, presence, and engagement. Artists will address the human experience, the stories of who we are, what we are, shared hopes, dreams, anxieties, perspectives, etc. As we all know, art is central to creating and reflecting community. For this show, artists were invited to reflect on and share collective stories & experiences, whatever those may be. Visitors can expect to see work in a variety of media, including drawing & painting, photography, design, sculpture, and more.

Documentary Purvis of Overtown

Featuring the acclaimed artist Purvis Young who was born, lived and died in Overtown Miami. The self-taught artist is world renowned and his pieces can be seen all over the world, from the Smithsonian to the New Orleans Museum of art. The art he paints is the portrait of his community, Overtown Miami and the trials and tribulations that went on throughout history. He is known as the Picasso of our generation.

Purvis of Overtown will be shown and then a talk back will be held after.

This event is free and open to the public.

The interactive exhibition, ��Ƶ “Cut Through ��Ƶ — Purvis Young: Stories of Overtown. ��Ƶ ” is on display on the ground and first floor of John Stewart Memorial Library.

Students in DelMarcelle's Art History and Graphic Design classes collaborated to curate, research, write, and develop the system for the exhibition design, which includes a Spotify playlist and several works from the artist.

Adam DelMarcelle, Assistant Professor of Graphic Design and academic curator Matthew Clay-Robison will be discussing the work of artist Purvis Young and the importance of academic galleries and museums.

This event is free and open to the public.

The interactive exhibition, ��Ƶ “Cut Through ��Ƶ — Purvis Young: Stories of Overtown. ��Ƶ ” is on display on the ground and first floor of John Stewart Memorial Library.

Young was an American artist from the Overtown neighborhood in Miami, Florida. His art blended painting and drawing with collaged elements utilizing everyday found materials.

Matthew Clay-Robison teaches at York College in Pennsylvania and is also the gallery director of their multiple locations. His work can also be found in the permanent and private collections of the Library of Congress, the Dr. David C. Driskell Collection, and the Dr. Robert E. Steele Collection. Mathew was also recently a Fullbright research scholar in Indonesia.

Wilson will host a reception for Madison Smarsh ��Ƶ ’s senior capstone exhibition, Justice in Design, at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 27, at Bogigian Gallery in Lortz Hall. The exhibition will continue through May 15, 2022.

The Bogigian Gallery is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Admission is free.
