On the Edge of Light

Sunday, April 26 at 3 p.m.
LOCATION UPDATE: The concert has been moved to Laird Hall.

Join us for an afternoon of inspiring music as the Cumberland Valley Chorale at ��Ƶ presents its Spring 2026 concert, On the Edge of Light, on Sunday, April 26, at 3 p.m. in Laird Hall.

The concert will explore themes of light and darkness, examining human experiences of despair, hope, joy and love through choral music. The program will feature selections from The Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel, timetested hymnody and additional works spanning popular, classical, and contemporary traditions.

The concert will also include a performance by Wilson ��Ƶ ’s a cappella group, the Ten Tones, featuring a new spring set and live selections from the group ��Ƶ ’s second professional recording session.

The event is free and open to the public and is made possible through the generous support of ��Ƶ.

The exhibition will run through April 10, 2026, and is open to the public at no cost.

The exhibition Jacques Callot and Those Who Came After brings together the eighteen etchings that form Callot ��Ƶ ’s pivotal masterpiece,Les Grandes Misères de la guerre (1633) (The Miseries and Misfortunes of War). In these images, Callot offers the first anti-war statement in Western art ��Ƶ —a vision both unflinching and profoundly human. It was the first, but it will not be the last.

In the centuries that followed, artists would return to Callot ��Ƶ ’s example, finding in his etched lines a mirror for their own age. Again and again, they ask the same maddening questions:Why do we go to war?Why are we asked to destroy those who are our brothers and sisters?

This exhibition traces the lineage of protest in the printed image through the works of Jacques Callot, Francisco Goya, Otto Dix, Ernst Barlach and others. Together, their art reminds us that in the darkest of hours, the artist bears witness. Asking us to never look away and to always ask ��Ƶ … why?

A note from the curator:

The exhibition Jacques Callot and Those Who Came After was a true labor of love ��Ƶ —a collaborative endeavor by ��Ƶ students during the Fall of 2025. Research and writing were undertaken by students in Western Art History 1000 ��Ƶ –1800, while the Graphic Design II class developed the exhibition ��Ƶ ’s visual language and way-finding system, enhancing our experience of the powerful work and artifacts in the exhibition. Students in Typography and the Letterform built the catalog, and Digital Photography students contributed striking photographic elements that elevate the artifacts shown alongside works by Jacques Callot, Otto Dix, Francisco Goya, Ernst Barlach, and others.

By bringing together a multidisciplinary group of students from diverse backgrounds, we created an exhibition experience that is both rich and nuanced. Interdisciplinary thinking and collaboration lie at the very heart of a liberal arts education, and throughout the months of preparation leading up to the opening, this remarkable group of students embodied the very best of what can happen in the classroom ��Ƶ —when learning is guided and considered by openness, curiosity, and a touch of romance. To say I am proud of them would be an understatement.

Join us for an evening of hymns, anthems, reflections, and readings to herald in the holiday season.

The Christmas Vespers service has been a ��Ƶ tradition for over one-hundred years, bringing together members of our community for an evening of hymns, anthems, reflections, and readings to herald in the holiday season. While it has taken varied forms over the past century, tonight ��Ƶ ’s service is inspired by King ��Ƶ ’s College ��Ƶ ’s historic Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols from 1918. ��Ƶ ��Ƶ ’s Christmas Vespers incorporates readings, anthems, and carols which speak across our divisions, remind us of our humanity, and inspire us to prepare our souls for the holiday season.

A documentary on the work of Amos Paul Kennedy Jr., a visionary artist and educator who transforms the tradition of letterpress printing into a vehicle for social justice and collective learning. Kennedy ��Ƶ ’s prints ��Ƶ —bold, layered, and unapologetically direct ��Ƶ —blend typographic form with the urgency of protest, creating a body of work that speaks as much to the heart as to the eye. Each poster is a declaration, a reminder, a lesson ��Ƶ —designed not only to be seen, but to be felt, remembered, and shared.

Working with handset wood and metal type, Kennedy embraces the physical labor and tactile beauty of traditional printing methods. He overprints vibrant colors in dense, rhythmic layers, allowing chance and repetition to become part of the message. No two prints are ever the same ��Ƶ —each carries its own visual weight and emotional resonance. Quoting civil rights leaders, community voices, and proverbs rooted in cultural wisdom, Kennedy ��Ƶ ’s work confronts injustice while educating and inspiring. His posters transform everyday materials into instruments of empowerment, reminding us that knowledge, like art, belongs to everyone. This exhibition is a celebration of design as dialogue, and of letterpress as a tool for change.

Immerse yourself in the world of Art at ��Ƶ and join us for the Final Showings and Exhibitions of the 2025 Master of Fine Arts Summer Residency on Saturday, July 19 at noon. It will be an afternoon of theatrical and choreographic solo and ensemble performance pieces, site-specific theatrical work, visual art exhibitions, short story readings, and interdisciplinary collaborations created and performed by our MFA students.

Performances will begin in the Appenzellar-Buchannan Dance Studio promptly at noon and will then move to site-specific and exhibition gallery locations.
