��Ƶ hosted an engaging panel discussion on modern hiring practices as part of its Health Sciences and Business Programs Strategic Seminar Series on Thursday, March 12, 2026. Professionals from healthcare, human resources, education, business consulting, and recreation management came together to offer candid advice on how to stand out in today ��Ƶ ’s competitive job market.

The conversation centered on what employers need to see beyond what appears on a résumé. While technical skills matter, panelists emphasized that the interview process is where they could see a candidate ��Ƶ ’s ability to collaborate with peers or adapt to different daily situations. ��Ƶ “A résumé does not tell me how they ��Ƶ ’re going to do working with colleagues, students, community members, and parents, ��Ƶ ” said Tina Clever, human resources director for the Chambersburg Area School District.

Panelists encouraged those looking for work to practice telling their stories, whether through mock interviews, peer feedback, or even AI tools that help generate interview questions. The interview is where hiring managers make sure the individual is authentic and willing to make an investment in the company or position. They cautioned against relying on AI to write résumés or cover letters, urging applicants to personalize everything they submit.

Panelists urged students to pursue internships early ��Ƶ —and more than one if possible ��Ƶ —using those experiences to build skills, confidence, and professional connections. Internships, they said, are often extended job interviews. ��Ƶ “When you complete an internship or externship program, employers really get to know you and connect with you, ��Ƶ ” said Lindsey Kearns, nurse manager for WellSpan Chambersburg. ��Ƶ “And I would much rather hire someone who I know is a good fit for the unit, somebody who's willing to learn, who's ready to dive in. ��Ƶ ”

Networking, both in professional spaces and among peers, was another recurring theme. Students were encouraged to join LinkedIn, attend local events, and get comfortable with uncomfortable situations. ��Ƶ “You never know who's watching, who you might have an impact on, and when that's going to come back around, ��Ƶ ” said Heather Hockenberry, executive coach and business consultant with Hockenberry Management Consulting.

The discussion closed with panelists reminding students that job searching is a two-way process. Candidates should evaluate organizations just as thoughtfully as organizations evaluate them. Above all, they encouraged students to stay curious, stay open, and keep stretching themselves toward their goals.

This event was the third in the ��Ƶ Strategic Seminar Series. The sessions are held once per semester with the next event being planned for fall 2026.

2025 Omega Eta Induction Ceremony Jenny Wed, 12/03/2025 - 16:28

On Tuesday, December 2, 2025, ��Ƶ held an Omega Eta induction ceremony. Omega Eta is the ��Ƶ chapter of the global Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, which recognizes nursing students and professionals who demonstrate excellence in scholarship, leadership, and service.

Students are offered induction to the group after being enrolled in a bachelor ��Ƶ ’s nursing program or equivalent; being ranked in the highest 35 percent of their nursing class; completing one-half of the nursing curriculum; and RN to BSN students must have completed 12 credit hours. Other ways to join the society are as nurse leaders, which have their own set of criteria.

The Omega Eta Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International was established at ��Ƶ in 2019. Sigma was founded in 1922 by six nursing students and has more than 100,000 active members and 600 chapters at institutions of higher education and healthcare partners from Armenia, Australia, and Botswana to Thailand, the United States, and Wales.

��Ƶ offers a pre-licensure Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), online RN-to-BSN and RN-to-MSN programs, and a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN). Explore all of the ��Ƶ nursing programs here.

During January break a group of ��Ƶ students and faculty traveled to La Romana, Dominican Republic on a service learning trip.

The group provided health care to the people living in the sugar cane worker villages known as bateys.

The students formed a dedicated, enthusiastic, and smoothly functioning clinic team that provided health assessment and medications.

��Ƶ “Going to the Dominican Republic with ��Ƶ was a great opportunity. As a nursing student enrolled in the Spanish course, it allowed me to not only apply the skills I have gained in the nursing program, but also to practice communicating with people in a way that was comfortable for them. This trip gave me the experience to work with a community in much need of medical care and expand my knowledge of the world. I am excited for the future Wilson students that will get this opportunity to serve those in need. ��Ƶ ” - Abigail Buck ��Ƶ ‘24, Nursing major

Over the course of five days they saw 375 patients, gave 288 children a dose of anti-parasite medicine, and interviewed 87 adults about blood pressure.

��Ƶ “Being able to go on a service learning trip, especially as a nursing major was amazing! I never thought I would have the opportunity during college to go abroad but the trip offered me a memory that will last a lifetime. Not only did I get hands-on nursing experience taking manual blood pressures but I also made many friendships and had such a fun week. If you have the opportunity to do a service learning trip do not hesitate because it will be so worth it. ��Ƶ ” - Jordan Yeager ��Ƶ ‘23, Nursing major

It was a very busy week where the students learned about the health care and socioeconomic needs in a resource-poor country.

��Ƶ “While most students worked in the clinic I was out with kids in the bateys. I taught them English and Spanish using Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes and Simon Says-this was the kid's favorite. I even got the kids to teach me Creole. It was a great experience as a future English teacher. ��Ƶ ” - Mariah Kiefer ��Ƶ ‘24, English major

They coped with language barriers, supply problems, and hygiene difficulties.

The students were also immersed in Spanish language practice with the patients and partners, revealing insights into another culture.

��Ƶ “The trip to the DR placed me in an environment where was I forced to communicate in Spanish in order to serve well, thus naturally developing my skills. The opportunity to get to know people by speaking their language and helping them to learn my own, significantly boosted my confidence and desire to continue practicing and furthering my knowledge of Spanish. ��Ƶ ” - Emma Lowman ��Ƶ ‘24, Equine Studies major

"This trip was so enlightening for myself, the staff, and the students. Being able to set up a dental clinic, a medical clinic, a family planning clinic, and a pharmacy with limited space and resources was amazing. In addition, students were able to visit clients in the villages for blood pressure monitoring and also teach children English. The trip helped us all realize what we are truly capable of achieving in one week. I am beyond proud of what this group accomplished and the memories will forever be in my heart!" -Pamela Hollenbach, Coordinator of ��Ƶ Online Nursing Programs

To celebrate the end of the week the team spent a day at the beach relaxing and enjoying the Caribbean waters.

New high-fidelity avatars for the ��Ƶ Nursing simulation lab

New high-fidelity avatars for the ��Ƶ Nursing simulation lab Jenny Fri, 07/01/2022 - 13:07

Two new "instructors" have joined the ��Ƶ nursing program. Two high-fidelity avatars have been purchased thanks to a generous $100,000 donation by WellSpan Health to the ��Ƶ Division of Nursing simulation lab. College Trustee Rhona S. Applebaum, Ph.D. gave an additional $50,000 to support their purchase and maintenance in the interactive lab.

The mother and newborn avatars are named Noelle and Tory. Students can take avatars Noelle and Tory ��Ƶ ’s pulses and blood pressure, perform exams, and even diagnose conditions based on programmed symptoms. And Noelle can simulate giving birth to a baby that has a heartbeat and other vital signs! The avatars join the 11 avatars already at the lab and prepare nursing students for treating real patients.
