For a group of ��Ƶ students, the start of the new year will mean more than just another semester; it will mean delivering healthcare to the sugarcane fields of the Dominican Republic. Sherri Stahl, RN, MHA, NEA-BC, instructor of nursing, and Wendell Smith, Ph.D., professor of Spanish, will lead the weeklong trip, scheduled for January 4-11, 2026. Together, they will guide students in providing essential medical services to residents of La Romana, a coastal town in the eastern Dominican Republic.

Medical missions trip, 2023

This marks the fourth time Smith has organized the trip. Since 2018, the program has combined service learning with language immersion, giving students the chance to apply both skills in real-world settings. ��Ƶ “Speaking Spanish in a classroom is a practice game, and students really don't have confidence in their abilities until they've actually used the language in a real situation, ��Ƶ ” said Smith. ��Ƶ “This experience helps students take responsibility for their own competence in the language and gives them confidence. ��Ƶ ”

For nursing students, the experience is equally transformative. Throughout the week, they will operate a medical clinic in the remote sugarcane fields, offering services such as blood pressure measurements, wound care, family planning, and even dentistry.

Many students return from the trip inspired to continue serving others. ��Ƶ “There's a lot that ignites the need for a continued pathway ��Ƶ —to continue to do service trips and serve ��Ƶ —that becomes part of their nursing way of life, ��Ƶ ” said Stahl.

To help support the mission, ��Ƶ held a fundraiser in late September. The evening featured Christian merengue music performed by Revelación Maranatha, a Latin American orchestra from La Romana. The concert raised $1,000, and during the event organizers announced an additional $5,000 gift to Wilson ��Ƶ ’s Spanish Department to help cover the clinic costs.

This gift came from the estate of Louise Buttrick-Davies ��Ƶ ‘53, whose memories of her Wilson years included a regularly hosted a Spanish conversation hour and special housing on campus in which students spoke only Spanish. ��Ƶ “Her fond memories of ��Ƶ were connected to learning Spanish, and that's why she dedicated it to the Spanish department, ��Ƶ ” said Professor Smith.

In total, the fundraiser raised $6,000, further supporting the students ��Ƶ ’ efforts. The trip promises to make a meaningful difference in the community while empowering students to gain hands-on experience and make the world a better place.

Amanda Eaton McMenamin earned her undergraduate degree in Spanish and French at the University of Delaware and her Ph.D. in Spanish (with a secondary concentration in French) from Johns Hopkins University.

Dr. McMenamin came to ��Ƶ in 2009. She teaches courses in Spanish language; literature in Spanish from Spain, Africa, and the Americas, including the United States; Spanish and Latin American film; and Hispanic cultures. She also teaches courses in feminist theory for Women ��Ƶ ’s Studies and is director of the Wilson Scholars Program. She has been awarded the Summer Research stipend twice (2014, 2017) and the Donald Bletz Award for Excellence in Teaching twice (2010, 2013).

Although she began as a specialist in the 19th and 20th centuries of Peninsular Spanish literatures and cultures, in her teaching and research agenda, she has considerably broadened her focus to incorporate Latin American literary and cultural production, particularly in the area of film studies.

Colombian American poet, speaker, actor, and inclusion strategist, Carlos Andrés Gómez, visited campus for Hispanic Heritage Month. In his own unique approach of storytelling mixed with humor and poetry, Carlos created an experience that was moving and thought-provoking.

Carlos is a Colombian American poet, speaker, actor, and inclusion strategist and spoke on "Creating Belonging on Campus".

The event included Melina Bromsoe, Argentinian teaching assistant from the FLTA Fulbright Program, sharing a poem by her sister with Wendell Smith, Associate Professor of Spanish translating.

During January break a group of ��Ƶ students and faculty traveled to La Romana, Dominican Republic on a service learning trip.

The group provided health care to the people living in the sugar cane worker villages known as bateys.

The students formed a dedicated, enthusiastic, and smoothly functioning clinic team that provided health assessment and medications.

��Ƶ “Going to the Dominican Republic with ��Ƶ was a great opportunity. As a nursing student enrolled in the Spanish course, it allowed me to not only apply the skills I have gained in the nursing program, but also to practice communicating with people in a way that was comfortable for them. This trip gave me the experience to work with a community in much need of medical care and expand my knowledge of the world. I am excited for the future Wilson students that will get this opportunity to serve those in need. ��Ƶ ” - Abigail Buck ��Ƶ ‘24, Nursing major

Over the course of five days they saw 375 patients, gave 288 children a dose of anti-parasite medicine, and interviewed 87 adults about blood pressure.

I never thought I would have the opportunity during college to go abroad but the trip offered me a memory that will last a lifetime. Not only did I get hands-on nursing experience taking manual blood pressures but I also made many friendships and had such a fun week. It was a very busy week where the students learned about the health care and socioeconomic needs in a resource-poor country.

��Ƶ “While most students worked in the clinic I was out with kids in the bateys. I taught them English and Spanish using Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes and Simon Says-this was the kid's favorite. I even got the kids to teach me Creole. It was a great experience as a future English teacher. ��Ƶ ” - Mariah Kiefer ��Ƶ ‘24, English major

They coped with language barriers, supply problems, and hygiene difficulties.

The students were also immersed in Spanish language practice with the patients and partners, revealing insights into another culture.

��Ƶ “The trip to the DR placed me in an environment where was I forced to communicate in Spanish in order to serve well, thus naturally developing my skills. The opportunity to get to know people by speaking their language and helping them to learn my own, significantly boosted my confidence and desire to continue practicing and furthering my knowledge of Spanish. ��Ƶ ” - Emma Lowman ��Ƶ ‘24, Equine Studies major

"This trip was so enlightening for myself, the staff, and the students. Being able to set up a dental clinic, a medical clinic, a family planning clinic, and a pharmacy with limited space and resources was amazing. In addition, students were able to visit clients in the villages for blood pressure monitoring and also teach children English. The trip helped us all realize what we are truly capable of achieving in one week. To celebrate the end of the week the team spent a day at the beach relaxing and enjoying the Caribbean waters.

In January, approximately 11 ��Ƶ students, accompanied by several faculty members, will travel to the Dominican Republic to take part in the College ��Ƶ ’s first medical mission trip.

During the eight-day trip sponsored by a nonprofit Christian organization called Mission: Hope, Wilson nursing, Spanish and health science students will assist local Dominican healthcare workers at a hospital and a migrant work camp.

��Ƶ “Medical missions are often life-transforming, ��Ƶ ” said Wilson Director of Nursing Carolyn Hart. ��Ƶ “We want those who participate to come away with an understanding of what it ��Ƶ ’s like not to have. There are a whole host of things that we take for granted ��Ƶ —including clean water, healthy food and access to health care ��Ƶ —that others do not have. ��Ƶ ”

The Wilson group will be centered in La Romana, a city of about 250,000 on the island ��Ƶ ’s eastern side. Students will work at the city ��Ƶ ’s hospital, La Buen Samaritano, and at a field clinic for Haitian migrants.

Hart will accompany the students on the trip, along with Wilson Associate Professor of Spanish Wendell Smith; Tim Hart, nursing department simulation coordinator; and Summit Health Senior Vice President of Hospital Services Sherri Stahl.

With Wilson ��Ƶ ’s recent emphasis on nursing and healthcare, organizers say they hope the medical mission trip will become a yearly event.

Organizers are planning a fundraiser for the trip and potential future missions. The ��Ƶ “Hustle for Health ��Ƶ ” running event will be held on campus on April 28, 2018.

��Ƶ honored students at its annual Academic Awards ceremony held Friday, May 1, in the Harry R. Brooks Complex for Science, Mathematics and Technology.

The following students received awards:

James Applegate Award, which is awarded to a student with an interest in drama and theater, went to two students: Annika Dowd of Chambersburg and Ghada Tafesh of Gaza, Palestinian Territories.

Lucy Bremmer Global Citizenship Award, awarded to a student who participates in the service learning component of Wilson ��Ƶ ’s global citizenship initiative, was given to Katelyn Wingerd of Orrtanna, Pa. Wingerd also received the Josef Michael Kellinger German or Foreign Language Award for a student who has demonstrated excellence in German or foreign language studies; and the Margaret Strode Haines Award, which recognizes a student with outstanding qualities of scholarship, interest in the humanities and strength of body, mind and spirit.

Alice Martin Brumbaugh Award in Sociology, which is given to a female student who has entered the college at a non-traditional age and shows a special interest and/or outstanding promise in the field of sociology, was awarded to Stacy Hess of Chambersburg.

CRC Press General Chemistry Achievement Award was given to Gaser Ahmed of Chambersburg.

Marel Harlow Cheng Memorial Prize, awarded to a student who has done well in international studies or has made some noticeable contributions to international understanding, went to Christina Gonzalez of Santa Barbara, Calif.

Regina Shaputnic Cuomo Mathematics Award, given to a student who is majoring and shows outstanding ability in mathematics, was awarded to Jennifer Skinner of Waynesboro, Pa.

Estep-Lawson Memorial Prize, awarded to a student in lower-level French who demonstrates excellence and shows future promise in French studies, went to Jesse Smith of Bronx, N.Y.

Mildred Franklin Prize, given to a senior for excellence in classical languages, was awarded to Tia Shearer of South Mountain, Pa.

Donna Gomer VMT ADP award for an adult degree student displaying excellence in the study of veterinary medical technology went to Jena Forsythe of Chambersburg.

Davison Greenawalt Grove Award for a student participating in research in physical and life sciences was given to Jessica Meck of Huntingdon, Pa.

Dorle Haas Memorial Prize, awarded to a senior for outstanding service within the greater Chambersburg area, went to Taylor Staudt of Robesonia, Pa.

Gloria Randle Scott-Frances Richards Hesselbein Prize, awarded to the senior who has demonstrated outstanding volunteer service during their four years at ��Ƶ, was given to Sonja Hess of Bolton Landing, N.Y.

Joanne Harrison Hopkins Literary Achievement Award, given for the finest piece of imaginative literature in fiction, poetry or drama produced during the academic year, went to Caitlyn Minelli of Beverly, Mass.

Catherine Herr Langdon Award, given to a senior who has demonstrated academic excellence and has gien encouragement and guidance to fellow students during the year, went to Nicole Melanson of Hyannis, Mass.

Mary-Eleanor Maule Travel Grant, awarded to graduating seniors or students entering their junior or senior years for travel planned in support of study in Spanish, was given to Netha Kane of Chambersburg.

Alta Lindsay McElwain Prize, awarded to the best student in Latin or Greek in the freshman class, went to Haley Hutchinson of Acme, Pa.

Robert Shannon McElwain Prize, awarded to the best student in mathematics, went to Kristyn T. Fogg of Virginia Beach, Va.

Helen Adams Nutting History Prize, awarded to a member of the junior or senior class who has demonstrated outstanding ability in the field of history, went to Nicole Trusky of Chambersburg.

Organic Chemistry Award, given to the student in organic chemistry who earned the highest grades for the year, went to Nicole Bodulow of Perkasie, Pa.

Outstanding Peer Teacher Award, given to honor exemplary service as a First-Year Seminar peer teacher for the year, went to Danniele Fulmer of Clymer, Pa.

Nicky Hoffman Reich Award, given to the student whose work with animals shows commitment to humane treatment, was awarded to Danielle Boock of Chambersburg.

Helga Rist Prize, given to a dedicated American foreign language student who has shown integrity, promise and potential, went to two students: Krista Dewald of Fairfax, Va.

John D. Rose Award in Environmental Studies, given to an outstanding junior majoring in environmental studies or biology to fund a summer research project or internship, went to Sadie Repp of Mercersburg, Pa.

William and Ivy Saylor Prize, established through the Academy of American Poets to support young poets at colleges nationwide, was awarded to Darah Wolf of Chambersburg.

Grace Tyson Schlichter Award in Communications, which is given to a senior who has shown general academic excellence and outstanding promise for a career in a field of communications, was given to Carol Zehosky of Shippensburg, Pa., and Shoshana Rudski of Allentown, Pa.

Mary Beers Sheppard Prize, awarded to the member of the senior class who has shown the keenest understanding and appreciation of literature, was given to Jennifer Dodds of Hagerstown, Md.

Joan M. Thuebel ��Ƶ ’52 Earthwatch Prize, which sponsors a student to participate in an Earthwatch Institute project of his or her choosing, was awarded to Jessica Larkin of Carlisle, Pa.

William P. Van Looy Business Prize, awarded to the junior or senior business and economics major who has demonstrated excellence in business studies and in service to the well-being of both the ��Ƶ and larger community, went to Han Yan of Wuhan, China

E. Grace White Prize, awarded to a senior whose major field is biology or biochemistry and who has demonstrated outstanding achievement and plans a career involving the biological sciences, went to Kotchaphorn Mangkalaphiban of Chiangmai, Thailand.

E. Grace White Summer Scholarship, which is given to an outstanding junior in biology for use at approved laboratories, went to Amadea Clement of Bowie, Md., and Ghada Tafesh of Gaza, Palestinian Territories.

��Ƶ Education Award is awarded to one elementary education major and a student preparing for teacher certification in a secondary school level who have shown outstanding achievement in both their academic studies and in their professional preparation. Jennifer Isaac of Biglerville, Pa., won the secondary award and Nathanael Stump of New Bloomfield, Pa., received the early childhood award.

Wilson Equestrienne Award, given to a graduating senior who has excelled in academics and equitation, went to Marissa Kosko-Blyler of Hollidaysburg, Pa.

��Ƶ Fine Arts Prize, given to a graduating senior for outstanding achievement in both art history and studio art, was awarded to Jessika Glass Dockery of Chambersburg.

Carolyn Zeleny Prize, which goes to a sociology student in the junior or senior class on the basis of academic excellence and/or community service, went to Heather Humwood of Chambersburg.

��Ƶ Scholar Athletes, those who have maintained a grade-point average of 3.4 or higher and participated in at least one Wilson varsity athletic team, are: Nicole Bodulow of Perkasie, Pa.; Nicole Melanson of Hyannis, Mass.; Emma Miller of Salisbury, Md.; Brittney Poff of Red Lion, Pa.; Lily Rembold of Franklin, Pa.; and Katelyn Wingerd of Orrtanna, Pa.

Wendell P. Smith received his undergraduate degree in Spanish and English from Vanderbilt University, and his Ph.D. in Spanish Literature from the University of Texas at Austin. His primary research focus is on chivalry in Medieval and Early Modern Spain. He is a nationally recognized expert on one the most famous Arthurian narratives that Don Quijote imitated when he went crazy: Amadís de Gaula (1508). His dissertation explored the politics of knights rescuing damsels in Amadís during the queenship of Isabel of Castile (1474-1504). Subsequently, he has published articles in such journals as La corónica, Revista de estudios hispánicos, and Cervantes on chivalric literature as a motor for exploration and conquest, on the gender debate in fifteenth-century Castile, and on cosmography in the Enchanted Boat chapter of Don Quijote. His most recent article explored the meanings of knighthood and chivalric romance in Cervantes ��Ƶ ’s novella ��Ƶ “La Gitanilla ��Ƶ ”. Current scholarly projects include an examination of definitions of disease in Calderón de la Barca ��Ƶ ’s honor plays, and an essay on the division between animals and humans in the late fifteenth-century cosmography of Diego de Valera. He teaches courses on Spanish language at all levels, introduction to Hispanic Literature and Culture, and advanced courses on translation and Early Modern Spanish literature, including a seminar on Don Quijote.

Dr. Smith came to academia after a brief career working as a journalist for national magazines such as Harper ��Ƶ ’s, Rolling Stone, and Spy. He is also a trained Spanish/English medical interpreter, and uses that knowledge to teach a service learning course in Medical Spanish. His current hobbies include ballroom dancing, backpacking, gardening, trail running, and training his Australian Shepherd, Mia. He spends summers in Denmark with his Danish wife, Marie.
